Honka uses only renewable wood from Finnish suppliers as raw material for the production of its houses at its factory in Karstula. The timber beams manufactured by Honka fall into the M1 building material category - low carbon products, and are also certified to the ISO 9001 quality standard and the ISO 14001 environmental standard.

Building with wood is the most climate-friendly because as trees grow they sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in the building for the duration of its long life cycle.

Thanks to proper and responsible forest management in Finland, many more trees are growing there than are being cut down. More than 70% of Finland is covered by forests and more than 40% of the trees in Finnish forests are pine.

Trees are important in the fight against climate change. When a tree grows, it absorbs a significant amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and thus cleans the air we breathe.

Did you know that one cubic metre of timber can absorb up to one tonne of carbon dioxide?

In a wooden building, carbon is stored outside the atmosphere for the lifetime of the building - which can be hundreds of years in the case of logs. At the same time, new forests grow using the power of the sun and even more carbon dioxide is absorbed by the new trees, again slowing climate change.

When wood products are produced, the low energy consumption results in much lower greenhouse gas emissions than when alternative materials are produced. In addition, industrial production of solid wood is energy efficient: it requires about 50% of the energy needed to produce cement and only 20% of the energy needed to produce bricks.

Honka's logs are produced in an industrial factory located in the heart of Finland's vast forests, from where the world's finest timber is sourced directly. The combination of experience gained over more than 60 years with innovative modern technology, the specialist knowledge and skills of the designers, engineers and workers at the Karstula factory, efficient production processes and Honka's responsible attitude to the environment determined our choice to create Samovilla - a place for relaxation and fun in harmony with nature.

Our houses are built from Finnish pine, which is sourced from PEFC certified Finnish forests. In Finland, Honka's home country, the wild growing forests far outnumber the felled trees, so the houses built from them are eco-friendly and environmentally friendly.

Although there are over 100 different species of pine trees around the world, only one of them grows completely wild in the forests of Finland - the Finnish Scots pine. It grows slowly, the wood is extremely hard, especially its heartwood. This is why the wood of the Scots pine is one of the densest softwoods on earth - an ideal material for building houses.

Boron contains phytoncides, which are essential oils and are found in many plants and trees. Phytoncides have the ability to inhibit the growth of fungi, bacteria and some viruses. Phytoncides have been found to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

The antibacterial natural compounds of softwoods eliminate bacteria and mold spores from the air in rooms that are constructed of solid wood logs.

In addition, the wooden walls of Honka houses naturally regulate the humidity in the rooms, softening sudden changes in relative humidity. This ensures that comfortable indoor conditions are maintained, minimising both high and excessively low levels of relative humidity in the house.

Solid wood has the unique ability to absorb moisture and release it back into the air when the room dries out. This naturally balances indoor humidity to levels between 30 and 50%, which is optimal for the health of the people living inside.

The results of various studies have also shown that rooms made of logs lower blood pressure and heart rate and induce a feeling of relaxation. Rooms made of solid logs reduce stress, just as a walk in the woods does.
